8 Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery went to France in August 1914 as part of 5th Division and took part in much of the early fighting. At the beginning of December, 1914 they were operating at St Jans Cappel, just to the north of Bailleul, close to the Belgian border, when, and at 3pm on 7th December, George Major was one of four men who were killed when 65th Battery were themselves hit by shell fire.
